The sun is finally here in Eugene! With all the fun summer activities happening, we want to make sure you are protecting your eyes from UV damage. Dr. Colter and Gabby discuss why it is important to wear sun protection, and the best ways to protect yourself!
The ocular structures and tissues are very sensitive to UV rays. If too much UV damage occurs, pre-mature cataracts can form inside your eyes, requiring cataract surgery early on in life. The sclera (the white portion of the eye), can develop callouses that can grow onto the sensitive cornea and block the vision. Sun damage can also put individuals at a higher risk of developing macular degeneration, a retinal disease that can cause permanent blindness in the central vision.
The delicate skin tissue around the eyes is also very susceptible to UV damage. This can lead to pre-mature aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, photoaging, and age spots. If severe, UV exposure can even lead to melanoma, actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, and other skin cancers.
Check out this UV Protection Chart that outlines what sun protection you should use compared to the UV index of the day:
Gabby outlined the two different types of sunscreens: chemical and physical. She recommends using physical sunscreen (also known as “mineral sunscreen”) because it lasts longer, offers complete coverage, and protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Your sunscreen main ingredients should include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Avoid oxybenzone, as this is a Dr. Foley Naughty List Ingredient!
